Before "Green" became a trend, Silk Dynasty was the pioneer in using natural and sustainable fibers like silk and abaca which are still used today. We have always been very conscious and selective of the materials and production techniques used to create our products. This has bot changed from our beginnings over 26 years ago.
Abaca (banana plant fiber) is sustainably grown and harvested there several times a year. Rainwater and sunshine are plentiful in the region and no synthetic fertilizers or pesticides are necessary. There is little waste as almost all of the plant is used in the wallcoverings, mats, sun shades and varied crafts of the local people. Different parts of the plant stalk are used to create our distinctive woven textures. They are hand twisted, braided and held in place by cotton thread. Preparation of the raw material, hand weaving, paper backing and trimming provide jobs to a rural community.
The relationship with these remote factories was developed exclusively for Silk Dynasty by American textile artist, Docey Lewis. Her influence is in the refinement of these culturally specific goods for distributions to a world market.
All of Silk Dynasty's Abaca products are durable and appropriate of use in both commerical and residential settings. They are Class A fire-rated and completely biodegradable.
